In 1971, Marvin Gaye released Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), a song lamenting humanity’s impact on the natural world. More than fifty years later, environmental concerns have moved from the fringes into the mainstream and businesses are increasingly expected to be part of the solution. In Daventry, Viridian Nutrition has been quietly doing exactly that for more than a quarter of a century. Founded in 1999, the family-owned company has built its reputation on three guiding principles – Effective, Ethical and Pure – demonstrating that commercial success and responsible business can go hand in hand.

Viridian Nutrition manufactures and distributes a range of over 250 vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements and nutritional products, supplying independent health stores throughout the UK and exporting to about 30 countries worldwide. From its headquarters, the company has grown steadily while maintaining its independence and commitment to ethical business practices.

At a time when Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are becoming a key consideration for businesses of all sizes, Viridian’s approach is notable because sustainability is woven into the fabric of the organisation rather than being a stand-alone initiative. The company regularly reviews the sustainability of its ingredients, packaging and manufacturing processes and has pioneered a number of industry firsts, including becoming the world’s first certified palm oil-free vitamin company. More than 65 products are certified organic through the Soil Association, further reflecting its commitment to responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship. Viridian also believes in non-animal testing and uses research based on human clinical studies to ensure their formulations contain therapeutic levels.

Reducing environmental impact is also a key part of the company’s philosophy. Viridian openly states that it continually questions the ethics and sustainability of its operations, including its energy footprint, ingredient sourcing and packaging choices. By focusing on clean formulations free from unnecessary additives and prioritising UK manufacturing, the company seeks to minimise waste and reduce the environmental burden often associated with global supply chains.

However, Viridian’s commitment extends well beyond environmental considerations. Social value has been embedded within the business since its inception. Every product sold contributes towards the company’s charitable giving programme, which has donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to a range of health, environmental and community charities. The business announced in July that cumulative charitable donations reached over £1 million in 2026, a remarkable achievement for a privately-owned company based in West Northamptonshire.

CA-WN was delighted to take part in Viridian’s ‘Big Charity Thank You Event’ in July which brought together some of the charities that have benefited in their Demo Kitchen in Daventry where we were treated to a delicious lunch and had an opportunity to meet members of the team. One of Viridian’s most significant partnerships is with Garden Organic, the nationally recognised charity promoting organic growing and sustainable gardening. Working together, the organisations have supported biodiversity projects, educational programmes and the preservation of important plant collections, including the National Collection of Comfrey. The partnership reflects the shared belief that healthy people and a healthy planet are intrinsically linked.

As Holly Thallon-Steenson, MD & Co-Owner says; “Doing the right thing has always been at the heart of Viridian. When my mum founded the business in 1999 on the 3 fundamental pillars of purity, charity and environment, she wanted to create something that genuinely made a difference, not just to people's health and happiness, but to the world around us. That belief is just as important to us today. From the ingredients we choose and the way we do business, to the charities and local communities we support, we believe that every decision is an opportunity to make a positive impact, from the seed all the way to the recycling bank. Reaching £1 million in charitable donations this year was an incredibly proud moment for us, but it's also a reminder of why we do what we do. As we continue to grow, I want us to never lose sight of those values and to show that a successful business can also be a force for good.”

Closer to home, Viridian has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to local and community led projects in Daventry and the surrounding area. The company supports a variety of local initiatives and organisations, including Discover Daventry, the Daventry Retail Forum, Daventry Heritage Trail and community sporting activities. It has also engaged with local young people through careers events and employability programmes, helping to inspire and develop the next generation of talent.

The company’s investment in people is equally evident internally. With many employees remaining at the business for more than a decade, Viridian has created a stable workplace culture centred on learning and development. Recent investment in dedicated education and training facilities reflects the importance the company places on sharing knowledge with employees, customers and the wider community.

Viridian’s achievements have attracted national recognition. In 2023, the company became one of the first recipients of the King’s Award for Enterprise, receiving the prestigious accolade for excellence in international trade following sustained growth in exports. Yet despite its growing international reach, the company remains firmly rooted in Daventry, continuing to champion independent retailers, community engagement and responsible business practices.

As organisations across West Northamptonshire seek to reduce emissions, strengthen ESG performance and create positive social impact, Viridian Nutrition provides an excellent example of what can be achieved when ethics are placed at the heart of a business. By combining environmental responsibility, charitable giving, local engagement and long-term thinking, the company shows that success need not come at the expense of people or planet. Instead, it demonstrates how business can be a powerful force for positive change – nourishing not only health and happiness, but communities and the environment too.
