Crisis, what crisis ...
… the crisis that our politicians and the populist media prefers not to mention.
CA-WN doesn’t do capital P Politics but it would be socially irresponsible if we didn’t couple the climate crisis to the elephant in the room. And call for action.
First, the expert briefings on climate change for politicians and business leaders
In November 2025, using factual evidence, subject experts explained how society will be hit by the ever-increasing speed of our changing climate. Here are November's ‘expert briefings’.
A new film based on the event is being shown locally – check out the People’s Emergency Briefing map.
Second, the national security report on risks of global ecosystem collapse
In January 2026 the government published its risk assessment of global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security. Its assessments include a high risk that national security and prosperity will be threatened by global ecosystem degradation and collapse.
Third, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
In February 2026 the key messages from this intergovernmental panel were that
... biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people underpin the economy, so all businesses depend, directly or indirectly, on biodiversity
and
... there are inadequate or perverse incentives that perpetuate business-as-usual ...
Fourth, the Munich Security Report 2026
The Munich Security Conference (MSC) is an annual world forum where senior political, military and diplomatic figures can personally address global security challenges.
This February's key themes included the erosion of international norms amid heightened global instability.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the ‘Under Destruction’ Munich Security report cover features an elephant. Here’s its opening summary:
The world has entered a period of wrecking-ball politics. Sweeping destruction – rather than careful reforms and policy corrections – is the order of the day. The most prominent of those who promise to free their country from the existing order’s constraints and rebuild a stronger, more prosperous nation is the current US administration. As a result, more than 80 years after construction began, the US-led post-1945 international order is now under destruction.
The Elephant in the Room
Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States of America, has repeatedly cast doubt on climate science. Here’s what he told the 80th Session of the United Nations:
It's the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world, in my opinion. Climate change, no matter what happens, you're involved in that. No more global warming, no more global cooling. All of these predictions made by the United Nations and many others, often for bad reasons, were wrong. They were made by stupid people that have cost their country's fortunes and given those same countries no chance for success.
If you don't get away from this green scam, your country is going to fail and I'm really good at predicting things. You know, they actually said during the campaign, they had a hat, the best-selling hat, Trump was right about everything. And I don't say that in a braggadocious way, but it's true. I've been right about everything.
And I'm telling you, that if you don't get away from the green energy scam, your country is going to fail. And if you don't stop, people that you've never seen before that you have nothing in common with, your country is going to fail. I'm the president of the United States, but I worry about Europe. I love Europe.
And there you have it, the two plain planks Trump wishes us to walk upon; denial of a climate crisis and scaremongering about immigrants.
Elephant parade
Trump's camp followers include some of the world’s richest people, Elon Musk, Larry Ellison and Jeff Bezos (together estimated to be worth over a trillion dollars) as well as politicians of significantly less worth.

P for Politics
As said at the beginning, CA-WN doesn’t do capital P Politics, but it would be socially irresponsible not to draw attention to local echoes of Trump’s climate denial and patriotic exclusivity.
Call for action
The crisis is genuine. In the face of climate scepticism, of business-as-usual, of divisive politics, our children’s and grandchildren’s futures are in our hands.
There are so many brilliant climate and nature groups around West Northamptonshire. If you are not already active with your local group, or if you don’t have an active local group, then make 2026 the year for action.
What might action look like for the many reading this who are already ethical consumers, committed to conservation and deeply involved in everything around them?
For those that can, the answer is straightforward; widen your engagement with others. Find time to attend local events that encourage public participation and strengthen community ties. Wherever possible make friends and family aware of all the positive local initiatives aimed at avoiding climate catastrophe.
Above all, as seasons change and new life emerges, celebrate and share nature’s optimism that good things lie ahead.
