Our Place by Mark Cocker
This book is a good one to read alongside the 2023 State of Nature Report (or at least the summary, it’s a long report…). Mark Cocker readably and concisely gives us a history of the British conservation movement, whilst also sharing his own efforts to restore a piece of land in Norfolk for nature. I for one had not previously realised how the poor condition of nature in the UK can be traced back to the Enclosure Acts as well as more recent legislation and government incentives.
The author’s deep familiarity with and knowledge of British landscape and nature underpins the book so lots to learn here about those too.
