Our Bookshelf recommendation this month is Ultra Processed People, about ultra processed food (UPF) and how it is affecting us as consumers, in all senses of the word. The equally important relationship of UPF to climate change might not be immediately apparent, though it does feature in the book.

This podcast, consisting of a panel interview with experts on the food industry, plastics and clean transport, shines a harsh light on the global UPF and plastics industry; the two are inextricably interlinked and both are deeply harmful to our health and to the natural world.

At the heart of it is this: UPF is the product of industrial processes that consume a huge amount of energy, and of course it always comes to us in shiny colourful plastic wrappers. Processing and packaging accounts for over 40% of the fossil fuels used in our food system.
