'Burn, baby, burn', a deliberately incendiary slogan associated with riots in the USA 60 years ago, has been taken up and repurposed.

‘Drill, baby, drill’, ostensibly aimed at reducing dependence upon foreign energy supplies, is yet another populist appeal in support of a distinct worldview whose cheerleader in chief is the current American president.

Future generations devastated by climate collapse may look back and ask ‘how was this allowed to happen. How did Donald Trump persuade the world to "burn, baby, burn"?'

One answer is that he’s not a solo act. Trump's global network of fellow-travellers includes a sizeable proportion of prominent people in Britain.

As climate hits a point beyond which there’s no recovery, it is pertinent to ask if our politics too is at a tipping point.

It must now be time for people with only marginal differences in political beliefs to come together and forge pragmatic alliances.

With a populist's focus on divide and rule, climate activists must unite and conquer.
