Come What May by Lucy Easthope

At CA-WN we’ve talked quite a bit recently about ‘adaptation’ to climate change, especially in our discussion on this topic at our April meeting. It’s evident that as a society and individuals we need to do more to prepare ourselves for a world of changed climate.

Lucy Easthope has decades of experience in emergency planning and disaster recovery, and her book references crises of all kinds, from personal bereavements and illness to terrorist attacks, floods, shipwrecks and the Covid pandemic. There are even a few pages on climate change.

Her advice is practical, wise and humane. She explains why the aftermath to all disasters follows a similar trajectory and that talking about what to do in the event of an emergency is part of the preparation, just as much as putting together a ‘go bag’ of essentials. She also emphasises the importance of giving survivors agency as well as support.

Various parts of Northamptonshire saw people unhoused by floods last year, including in my own village. Our parish council is responding by putting together a more robust emergency plan; I hope that lessons I have learned from this book will help me make a useful contribution to that plan. I’d really recommend contacting your parish or town council and asking to see their emergency plan – you might be relying on it one day.
