50 Families project
CA-WN is proud to be a member of the West Northamptonshire Sustainable Food Network. We recently received this update from the Network about the 50 Families project, a great example of agencies working together. Building a sustainable future for our communities is about connecting and building better public health, as well as about renewable energy and planting trees.
“It’s helped me plan meals better, waste less food, and feel more confident about putting nutritious meals together for my children.” - 50 Families participant
Three Northamptonshire charities have joined forces to deliver the 50 Families project. This strategic philanthropic initiative has supported 50 local families in making healthier food and cooking choices, while also aiming to reduce pressures related to the ongoing cost of living.

The project has helped people build confidence and skills with healthier food, reduced social isolation, and encouraged families to connect and support each other.
Delivered by HOME-START NORTHAMPTON, Power of the Mind Networks, and The Spring Charity, and supported and funded by Northamptonshire Community Foundation on behalf of Food4Heroes, the project was evaluated by the University of Northampton.
This year-long initiative has already made a real difference to families’ confidence, wellbeing, and daily life. Unlike short-term interventions such as food banks or school holiday healthy eating initiatives, 50 Families provides lasting skills that families can use in their everyday lives.
Key findings from the University of Northampton report include:
🔹52% report increased awareness of healthy eating and lifestyle choices
🔹59% felt “very confident” or “confident” with their cooking at the end of the project
🔹82% of parents rated their health as average or better in the final survey
Recommendations for future community cooking collaborations:
🔹Fund beyond short-term pilots to support lasting health outcomes
🔹Invest in fully equipped kitchens so families can cook together
🔹Integrate affordable, family-friendly physical activity alongside food initiatives
A toolkit has also been produced, giving practical sessions for families who wish to continue cooking together and fit it into busy lives in diverse homes. It can be found on page 37 of the report.
