Adrian will be talking to us on a very current topic: developments in energy and land use. He has given us a little optional homework to help us make the most of this meeting - see his questions below.
First, some context for his talk:

  • The ‘Clean Power 2030 Action Plan’ is being developed by the National Energy System Operator (NESO), a recently nationalised team in the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ).
  • NESO is developing a countrywide plan for energy demand, supply sources and locational assessments for power stations and the network to connect them together into one system.
  • Regional plans will be developed to build on the national plan (Northamptonshire in ‘Central England’ region, Leicestershire in ‘East Midlands’ region).
  • Local Area Energy Plans will be developed by each city and county. Some are more advanced than others.
  • All the above are currently forecast to be ready by 2028.

In preparation for the meeting, Adrian has provided questions for us to think about in advance, linked to the subject of his presentation. You will not be tested on these (!), but gathering your thoughts might help you get the most from the discussion.

1.      How should land types for new (solar) infrastructure be CLASSIFIED in an objective way for increased democracy via community involvement?

2.     How should land use be PRIORITISED for policymakers to deliver what society wants?

3.     How should construction be INCENTIVISED for industry to create prosperity while being responsible stewards?
